In 1271, Marco Polo, his father, and his uncle set off for Asia on a series of adventures that were later documented in Marco´s book. They returned to Venice on April 1st 1295, 24 years later, with many riches and treasures among which was a strange new food that the natives of Tibet called "phiatsau". This meal was an unleavened bread with crushed tomacaos ( an ancestor to today’s modern tomato), a simple cheese made from goat’s milk and the oil of crushed pine nuts. The Venetians loved this delicacy so much that they brought the recipe back with them to Venice. Today we know this wonderful concoction all the world over as pizza. Join us in celebrating the birth of pizza in the western world as we toast Marco Polo and his family at Squire’s restaurant in Dundalk.
Ok that was a joke, Marco Polo didn´t bring back Pizza but there is no reason we can´t have some anyway.
